Getafe - Leganés. The most particular derby in Spain.

The game between Getafe y Leganés is extraordinary due to many reasons. Is the only derby which has been played in all the divisions of the Spanish league, from Local Second Division to First Division, since last 2017. In this post, we are going to discover why this game is so particular and extraordinary for locals from Getafe and Leganés.


  The first documented game between Getafe and Leganés was on 25th April 1948, when both squads were playing in the Local Second Division. Nowadays, the context has changed a lot, The Deep Blues and The Cucumber Growers can enjoy and show proudly their derby in the highest Spanish division.

  The rivalry between The Deep Blues and The Cucumber Growers is historic. That rivalry started around the middle of the last century, when players from each team were locals, they were working and living in each city, and their passion was football. At this time, football in Southern Madrid wasn't a matter of money, but a matter of feelings.

   At the beggining the team colours were felt in other way, the games between Getafe and Leganés were conditionated for the classic rivalry between neighbours.
"The satisfaction of beat your neighbour can't be bought using money."
  In the latter years, their rivalry is raising, due to two reasons. First, when Getafe CF went up to First Division, Leganés went down to Second Division B. And second, when Leganés upgraded to First Division, Getafe downgraded to Second Division, after 12 seasons playing in the highest division.

   The press and the media are always igniting the derbis, specially this one. So, the game between neighbours has been declared as a "High Risk Match". This title migth be too much for this game, but it is crystal clear that Leganés will find a hostile Coliseum surrounded by harsh atmosphere.

   Just before the first derby in First Division at Getafe, the supporters from the South stand showed one of the best tifos that have been seen at Coliseum. Our History, your dream, making a reference to the Getafe's Glory Days, when they played Europa League and Copa del Rey final twice.

   The Blue Tide (nickname given to Getafe fans) made the Butarque's corner a little Coliseum during the first derby in First Division, due to Leganés scored first, they chanted along the whole match in order to encourage the team to defeat Leganés. Finally Getafe won 1-2.

   The Getafe's tifo had a low-cost reply from The Cucumber Growers supporters, just afterwards, plenty of gags were shared in the social media by some Getafe fans to laugh of them:

 When Leganés supporters couldn't enjoy derbis against the first team due to they were playing in a lower division, they showed a tifo at Butarque just before the game against Getafe B, Getafe's Second team. But this didn't make a difference because Leganés was defeated. In the tifo could be read: Getafe, Pocilga del Sur. Getafe, the Southern Pigsty.

   Despite of the rivalry among neighbours, to enjoy our derbi in the top Spain's division is enough to celebrate and to be proud. Both squads are small teams from the south of Madrid, and they achieve the top soccer league in Spain and they found their way in an area which mostly supports Real Madrid and Atletico.

  • Luis Aragonés made his debut in Getafe CF at season 57/58, he played this derby twice.
  • Samuel Eto'o made his debut in CD Leganés at season 97/98.
  • Some historic Getafe players who played for Leganés as well: Pachón, Vivar Dorado, Pedro, Angelín, Belenguer, Miguel Ángel, among other.
  • Getafe team is also known as The Deep Blues due to the color of their uniform.
  • Leganés team is also known as The Cucumber Growers due to at Leganés the best Spain's cucumbers are grown.
  • Getafe played Leganés 56 times in LaLiga, 18 win, 20 loss y 18 draw.
  • From Coliseum to Butarque there are only 5.4 km distance.

A derby with no intensity. Summary of Getafe - Leganés. (30/03/19)

Getafe was deservedly defeated by Leganés 0-2 in the southern Madrid derby.    Getafe supporters did not enjoy a lovely day because their team was unrecognizable. Getafe's playing was regrettable. This two words would be the best way to describe how bad Getafe played Leganés. Perhaps, due to either the unusual time (1:00 pm local time) or the national teams have played for two weeks.    Leganés started dominating the match. In the 15th minute Maksimovic was pointed a penalty when he stopped a shot from Leganés with his hand. The only positive thing of this awful day was when David Soria blocked the penalty shot. The rest of first half wasn't interesting at all.    The firsts attemps of the second half would have seemed that Getafe wanted to win the match but just for a while because Leganés scored in 50th minute (goal awarded by the VAR because the lineman had canceled it by offside). Ángel secures the Champions League position one more week. Summary of Espanyol - Getafe. (02/04/19)

Getafe tied 1 to 1 in their visit againts Espanyol in Cornellà thanks to Ángel.    It is always difficult to do the right things, even more when the last match was horrible. But Getafe got find themselves and they showed their high intensity and their playing that they used to have.   Before the start, Bordalás surprised us: Hugo Duro, who is our homegrown favorite, was lined up. He was the most active player in the first half. The clearest chance to scored for Getafe was when Foulquier missed a 3 versus 1 in favor.    When the second half started, Getafe wanted to win the match and Mata almost scored. Getafe was sorry about this chance when Espanyol got a goal taking an advantage of a communication failure between Djené and Soria. Espanyol was winning without deserving it and Bordalás lined up both Molina and Portillo to overcome the situation. Same player always, Molina, this time he helped with a perfect pass to Ángel and our forward didn’t miss the chance to score.
