When the spanish press talk about the downgrade, they give a lot of stats from previous seasons, but in Getafans Blog we think it is not enough and we are going to find, mathematically, the precise amount of points required to have a guaranteed place in First Division  in Spain.

How many points are required to have a guaranteed place in LaLiga the following season?



Nowadays, Getafe CF is in a very good shape, temporary classified to play in Europe next season. Currently, they have 31 points in the table so the press starts to speak about the salvation and about the famous 42 points required for it. Of course, this is wrong, it depends on a lot of factors, but we are wondering, Do exist any amount of points required to have a guaranteed place in LaLiga? The answer is YES, and in this article your question will be answered.
  • How many points are required to have a guaranteed place in LaLiga the following season?
In order to find this data, it is required to have the worst situation possible at end of the on going season for the team who wants to keep up the First Division:
  1. The last two teams of the table (19th and 20th) loses all the games and the result in the matchs between them is not relevant.
  2. The other teams (from 1st to 18th), achieve the highest amount of points possible, it means, all the games ends up in victory, there is no draws and all the points are shared for them equally.
   In other words, the 18th team in the table would draw with the other teams above it (from 1st to 17th) so it would downgrade because of the goal average. So one point more than this team it is required to ensure the salvation. Translating this words to an equation:

Apliying this theory, the final table would be like that:


   In conclusion, 64 points are required to keep up the First Division mathematically, depending only on yourself.
  • How many points are required to downgrade mathematically to Second Division? 
If we want to know the amount of points below it the downgrade is mathematically ensured, to study the best possible situation, the situation which gives the lowest amount of points possible

  2. The other teams (from 1st to 18th), achieve the lowest amount of points possible, it means, all the games ends up in draw, there is no wins and all the points are shared for them equally.

Apliying this theory the final table would ve like that:


  In summary, with less than 21 points the downgrade to Second Division is  mathematically guaranteed, in other words, 21 points is the cheapest salvation possible. Less points than 21 makes impossible to keep up the division.
  • What if a team achieve between 22 and 64 points in LaLiga?
   It is very simple, when a team reach more than 21 points but less than 64, to keep up the division depends on the other teams. The closer to 64 points a team is, the more probably is this team will keep up the division.
  • Conclusion
    If you hear another amount of points to reach the salvation from the downgrade different than this one, it is only based in previous stats and not in maths. In the on going season, Getafe CF is shining like in their Glory Days, so the fans expect something else than to fight for the bottom positions in the table. Getafe has a great team, great players, great coach and a brilliant chairman, Ángel Torres. Also all of them have the support of the fans. All of them are doing a very good job and they deserve to be in the top positions at the end of the on going season.

Getafe - Bilbao. The UNFAIR VAR decision. Jaime Mata's penalty.

The football match between Getafe and Atlethic was being balanced, but in the latter minutes the neither the referee nor the video assistants referees watched the crystal clear penalty on Jaime Mata for Getafe C.F. In the last ball of the match, while Getafe was attacking and pressing in the Athletic´s box, a grab knocked over Jaime Mata and spread the polemic. After that, the referee allowed the game kept going beyond the extra time (+4 min) apparently waiting for the VAR´s decision, but this decision never happened. A derby with no intensity. Summary of Getafe - Leganés. (30/03/19)

Getafe was deservedly defeated by Leganés 0-2 in the southern Madrid derby.    Getafe supporters did not enjoy a lovely day because their team was unrecognizable. Getafe's playing was regrettable. This two words would be the best way to describe how bad Getafe played Leganés. Perhaps, due to either the unusual time (1:00 pm local time) or the national teams have played for two weeks.    Leganés started dominating the match. In the 15th minute Maksimovic was pointed a penalty when he stopped a shot from Leganés with his hand. The only positive thing of this awful day was when David Soria blocked the penalty shot.
